February - Amethyst

Amethyst is the traditional birthstone for the month of February and also represents the 6thyear of marriage. Amethyst is a healing stone and has links to relieving stress through vibrations which rid the wearer of negativity and attract positive energies, therefore making this stone good for cleansing and protection and also for helping one become in tune with oneself emotionally.

Just like many gemstones, its roots can be traced back to ancient times and amethyst is said tobe the 9th stone in the breastplate of the high priest. The word amethyst is thought to be derived from a Greek word meaning sober or to be protected from intoxication. Historically, amethyst was worn only by royalty and the association between the colour purple and royalty still exists today, although the gemstone is no longer restricted to royalty. Its beauty means it is a very popular choice, particularly in piecesof jewellery.

Amethyst is the most prized variety of quartz and varies in colour from very pale to a deep purple with the most sought after varieties having a red or rose hint to the deep purple.

Amethyst is found in many areas around the world such as, Brazil, Argentina, Sri Lanka,Canada, Zambia and India. The world’s largest amethyst geode was found in Uruguay and is named "Empress of Uruguay”and took 3 months to fully extract from where it was found. It is estimated to weigh a staggering 2.5tonnes and be over 3 metres tall.
